FREE Local departures Or join at the port OBERWESEL The recently opened Rheinsteig is a spectacular walking trail along the hills overlooking the majestic River Rhine. It's easy to explore the romantic Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in stages. Our guided walks will take you along the most scenic sections past magnificent castles, pretty villages, vineyards, and lush flowering hillsides with many places to stop and admire the breathtaking views. You will stay in the traditional village of Kamp Bornhofen on the Rhine, where you can relax after the day's walks and sample the delicious local wines. YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Local departure and mid-morning crossing to Calais. Early evening arrival in Kamp Bornhofen for a four night stay. Welcome drink and dinner on arrival. DAY 2 - This morning meet your local guides and set out for your first walk along the Rheinsteig footpath to Braubach (approx. 4½ hours' walk). A visit to the Marksburg Castle overlooking the Rhine is included, before returning to the hotel by coach. Enjoy a wine tasting before dinner tonight. DAY 3 - Today's walk takes you from the hotel following the Rheinsteig in the opposite direction to the village of Kestert. You will walk through the nature trail and pass the Sterrenberg and Liebenstein castles. Shortly before Kestert there will be a wonderful viewpoint overlooking the Rhine. After time to relax, board the train for the return journey (approx. 5 hours' walk). The slightly easier walk is on the other side of the river. The coach takes you to St. Goarshausen where you cross on the car ferry to St. Goar and you set out along the Rhine Castle trail to Oberwesel. There will be time to explore Oberwesel before returning to Kamp Bornhofen by ferry (approx. 3 hours' walk). DAY 5 - Depart after breakfast for a late afternoon crossing back to the UK and continue to your original departure point in the evening. YOUR HOTEL The family-run Hotel Singender Wirt is a firm favourite amongst Travelsphere clients. The hotel has a combined bar and restaurant and all bedrooms have private facilities, TV, telephone and hairdryer. Please note there is no lift in the hotel. WALKING INFORMATION Our walks require a reasonable level of fitness and ideally some previous walking experience. You will need comfortable walking boots, a small rucksack, waterproofs, a hat and sunglasses. A local guide will also accompany you on your walks. Grade 1 Walks These are for anyone of any age. Plenty of rest stops and time to enjoy the local scenery with up to 4 hours walking a day, mostly on good paths but occasionally rough underfoot. Ascent less than 300m per day. Grade 2 Walks These are moderate, for anyone who is comfortable walking hills. Still plenty of time to rest and enjoy the scenery, however up to 5 hours walking a day on slightly more rugged terrain. Ascent less than 500m per day. For those of you who are feeling really fit, and fancy something a bit more challenging, we offer the Königsetappe or royal stage' of the Rheinsteig from the Loreley to Kaub. Our coach will take you to the Loreley visitor's centre for the start of the walk. After a couple of hours, a stop will be made at a viewpoint known as the Waldschule for a picnic. After lunch the walk continues along the Rheinsteig trail as far as Dörscheid/Kaub to catch the ferry back to Kamp Bornhofen (approx. 5 hours' walk).
